FLY - SING - ACROSS the U.S.A.
I have been flying small airplanes for 39 years. Despite several breaks for pregnancies, young children, overworking at job, and the vicissitudes of life, I have amassed almost 800 hours of flying time. Flying across the United States has always been on my bucket list.
In April of 2015, age 62, I retired from my job as an electrical engineer and AV professional. Why so young? I want this trip to be super safe, and waiting until I am a little older, slower, (dumber?) - - - didn't seem like the best idea. And I can always go back to work.
In a perfect world with perfect weather and perfect airplane in a more or less straight line, the flight would take me about 22 hours of flying time, which has some allowance for diversions, climbing, descending, and all that.
My personal endurance limit is about 4 hours, after which time I need to stretch my legs, use a restroom, brush my teeth, take a shower (no air-conditioning in the plane), and enjoy time without a headseat and the sound of air traffic control in my ears.
When I received an invitation for a wedding in New Jersey, the plan began to take shape. I would depart September 18 for a wedding on September 26, which should allow me plenty of wiggle space for unexpected weather, unexpected sightseeing, and, in general, the unexpected.
Plus the added time enroute would give me the chance to stop along the way and SING. I am a member of Sweet Adelines International and we sing four part acapella harmony in barbershop form. It's an addictive and exacting hobby. There are 500 Sweet Adelines Choruses around the world and I was going to be flying over about 50 of them on my route. IDEAL places to stop and rest and connect with this fabulous group of women. I fell in love with the idea and that was that. I must do it!
More coming.....!!!
This is such a wonderful idea. Best wishes for a great trip. If you're around Ruston, Louisiana, anytime, be sure to visit Piney Hills Harmony Chorus!
